For the French, Verdun IS the First World War and sacred to our national memory. The Battle of Verdun (Feb-Dec 1916) was the longest battle of the war and one of the costliest in all human history.

Varennes en Argonne is noted for the inn (still standing) where King Louis XVI and Queen Marie-Antoinette were arrested and sent back to Paris to face the guillotine. Visit the magnificent Pennsylvania Memorial, erected by the State of Pennsylvania and dedicated to the volunteers from that state who fought in France in the First World War.
